Overview
Novocap Courtage is an independent brokerage firm, in one of the most contested sectors of the French web, facing national comparison platforms with budgets on an entirely different scale. A specialist's positioning, to be built where the giants cannot be everywhere.
The starting point
At the outset, organic visibility centred on brand searches: those who already knew the firm found it easily. What remained was to exist on generic searches, the ones that bring in a customer who doesn't know you yet, largely held by the national platforms.
The instinct would be to attack the big keywords head-on. That is exactly what not to do: you don't take on a national platform on its flagship query with a small firm's site. The right question was not "how do we rank first on the most expensive word" but "where can a specialist legitimately earn its place?".
What I did
- Technical audit and semantic strategy: mapping the genuinely winnable queries, local and niche, rather than showcase keywords.
- A writing guide, so the client could write his own pages. A deliberate choice: on an independent firm's budget, content produced by the subject-matter expert beats bought content, provided you give him the frame.
- Rewrote titles and descriptions, and deployed structured data on key pages to describe to search engines the exact nature of each offer.
- Performance work: lighter scripts and a stabilised layout.
- A local pages strategy: same structure from one town to the next, but content mandatorily differentiated, never copy-paste.
Two reflexes that make the difference
The first: watch the front door, not just the curves. Mid-engagement, an essential page in the contact path started returning a server error. That is the kind of failure no rank-tracking dashboard shows: rankings improve, and meanwhile enquiries are lost. Spotted, flagged as urgent, fixed.
The second: knowing how to read an indicator that falls. The site's average position dropped for a month. It was not a regression: the site had started appearing on dozens of new local queries, necessarily poorly ranked at first, which mechanically drags the average down, while it was losing impressions on old queries with no commercial value. A number falling while the business improves: the job is to explain it to the client, not to hide it.
Results
In a few months the firm went from total non-brand invisibility to first position on its main local query, and now appears on page one organically across several niches of its trade. The first non-brand clicks arrived, and above all the first genuine inbound commercial lead via the site.
The qualitative signal is perhaps the most telling: visitor engagement time multiplied by four. People no longer bounce, they read. And the first sessions from ChatGPT appeared. The site is starting to exist for AI too.
Business impact: an independent firm that did not exist beyond its own name now ranks ahead of national players on the local queries that matter, and receives its first inbound enquiries. The lesson holds for any small business: you do not win by fighting giants on their ground, you win by choosing ground they are not on.
The specific queries worked on and the detailed positions are not published: they are part of the client's competitive advantage.
