Why GEO changes everything

Traditional search engines are no longer enough. ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude: these generative AIs answer users’ questions directly. And 60 % of searches now happen on AIs rather than classic search engines.

Result: zero-click searches are exploding. The AI gives the answer directly, with no need for the user to click a link. Your site disappears off the radar.

GEO changes this paradigm: it’s the strategy to be cited as a source in those generative answers. Being cited = qualified traffic, brand authority, leads.

  • ✓ Be the cited source, not an anonymous mention
  • ✓ Generate qualified traffic from AIs
  • ✓ Strengthen your expertise in the eyes of AIs
  • ✓ Dominate zero-click searches

GEO goal: be cited as a trusted source in generative answers

The 4 pillars of GEO

How AIs decide to cite you

Generative AIs evaluate content against 4 key criteria. Master these pillars = get cited systematically.

🌐

E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. AIs look for recognizable sources with proven expertise. Less vague content, more demonstrated experience.

  • → Build a unique expertise profile
  • → Demonstrate your client results
  • → Accumulate trust signals
📋

Structured content

Schema.org, JSON-LD, semantic markup. AIs read the code, not the text. Perfect content but unstructured? AIs won’t see it.

  • → Schema.org: Organization, Person, Article
  • → FAQPage schema for each question
  • → Structured data for Google
📖

Wikipedia strategy

A Wikipedia page or mention = instant validation by AIs. Wikipedia is a major trust signal for any generative AI.

  • → Creating / improving a Wikipedia page
  • → Mentions in industry pages
  • → Cross-references to your site
🎯

Question domination

AIs search by question. Control the main questions in your industry = control the generative answers.

  • → Optimized and structured FAQ
  • → Detailed question-answer content
  • → Positioning on 50+ key questions

Potential for clients with well-executed GEO

The era of zero-click searches

Since 2023, the search landscape has changed radically. AIs answer the question directly, and users no longer need to visit a website.

Example: A user types « what is CRO » into Perplexity. Instead of a list of results, Perplexity generates a complete answer with your content as the source. You receive qualified traffic directly.

GEO turns this « problem » into an opportunity. When an AI generates an answer, it cites sources. Your goal: be those sources.

2026 reality: AIs have become the new search engines. Not optimizing for GEO = losing 60 % of your potential traffic.

My methodology

5 steps to dominate GEO

A progressive, measurable approach to turn your site into the preferred source for AIs.

1

GEO Audit

Analysis: current positions in AI answers, E-E-A-T score, competitive comparison.

2

AI content plan

Identification of 50+ key questions. Structuring: which AIs ask them, who is already cited.

3

Full structuring

Schema.org, JSON-LD, FAQ page. The code speaks as much as the content.

4

Wikipedia creation/improvement

Wikipedia page or compliant mention. That’s a +400 % signal for AIs.

5

Monitoring & optimization

Monthly tracking of AI citations. Adjustments based on what AIs ask.

Expected outcome

After 3 months: presence in 30-40 % of AI answers on your target keywords . After 6 months: preferred source for 60 %+ of questions in your industry . Additional, stable, quantified traffic.

GEO FAQ

Frequently asked questions

SEO targets Google and traditional search engines. GEO targets generative AIs: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, Gemini. The techniques overlap (excellent content, structure), but GEO adds specific elements: visible E-E-A-T, FAQPage schema, Wikipedia. Overall: SEO optimizes for ranking. GEO optimizes for AI citations.
AIs index quickly. First citations can arrive in 2-4 weeks. But a robust GEO strategy (50+ questions, Wikipedia, E-E-A-T) takes 3-6 months to really take off. After 6 months, AI traffic becomes a stable, predictable source.
No. SEO and GEO are complementary. Today: 60 % AI, 40 % traditional Google. This ratio will evolve, but Google won’t disappear. Optimizing for both = robust strategy.
No, but it’s a powerful accelerator (+400 % signal). If you qualify (sufficient notability), creating a Wikipedia page amplifies GEO results. If you don’t qualify, the other pillars (E-E-A-T, structured content) can compensate.
GEO can complement your existing SEO (€1.5K-3K for structuring + optimized content), or be a full strategy (€6K-15K including audit, content, Wikipedia, monitoring). Like any marketing: ROI depends on your industry and AI search volumes.
Field report

The GEO monitoring tool I built for a SaaS client

I delivered a custom GEO monitoring tool to a SaaS player in the real-estate sector. Why a home-grown tool when Otterly, Profound, Peec.ai, and Kai (AthenaHQ) already exist? Because none of them covered the specific business-query scope we wanted to track. And because the monthly costs of an enterprise GEO license quickly exceed those of a custom MVP that pays back in a few months.

The tool queries the public APIs of ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Search with AI Overviews enabled daily, on a list of 30 critical business prompts. For each prompt, we capture: the generated answer, cited sources, the client brand’s relative position, sentiment, and competitors mentioned. All of this is consolidated in a weekly dashboard that drives my content / Wikipedia / E-E-A-T recommendations.

What we observe after a few weeks of monitoring: the volatility of LLM answers is enormous. A brand can be cited Thursday then disappear Monday. Traditional SEO ranking gives a false sense of stability. On GEO, it’s a constantly moving landscape, hence the absolute need to monitor to adjust.

MVP tech stack

  • ChatGPT API (gpt-4o), Perplexity Sonar, SerpAPI for AI Overviews
  • Python scheduler + cron (daily run at 6am)
  • Postgres storage (timeseries of answers)
  • Metabase dashboard for weekly review
  • Monthly infra cost: under €100

The KPIs we track

  • AI Share of Voice: % of answers where the brand is cited
  • Inbound citations: site URL listed as a source
  • Sentiment: positive / neutral / negative
  • Competitors mentioned: who shows up in the brand’s place
  • Volatility: gap between consecutive runs

Want this kind of monitoring for you?

I can either (a) hook you up to a well-configured market tool, or (b) build you a custom monitoring MVP tailored to your critical business prompts. The decision is made after a 30-minute audit to evaluate the query scope to cover and the right cost/precision ratio.
